一、同义法
就是用意思相同或相近的词语来相互解释。这就要求我们在复习的过程中善于归纳学过的同义词或近义词。如：class, lesson(节课); big, large(大的); fast, quickly(快地); nearly, almost(差不多); happy, glad, pleased(高兴的); difficult, hard(困难的); end, stop(结束); receive, get(收到); ring sb(up), give sb a ring, call sb (up), telephone sb(给某人打电话); over, more than(多于); just now, a moment ago(刚才); offer, give(提供，给予); reach, get to, arrive in / at(到达); look out, be careful(当心，注意); look after, take care of(照看); enjoy, have a good time(玩得愉快); make a decision, make up one’s mind, decide(决心，决定); on display, on show(展览); at last, in the end, finally(最后，终于); at first, in / at the beginning(在开始时) 等等。

二、反义法
就是用反义词的否定形式来解释词语的意思。这就要求我们在复习过程中善于归纳学过的反义词。如：用not new或not young来解释old；用not large来解释small；用not strong来解释weak；用not pass来解释fail等等。

三、描述法
对于某些词语，特别是没有相应的同义词或者反义词的一些词，可以用我们学过的词语来加以具体的描述，使别人明白该词的意义。如：用go to see来解释visit；用hear from sb来解释get a letter from sb；用let sb down来解释make sb sad；用like A better than B来解释prefer A to B；用send for sb来解释ask sb to come；用go after来解释follow；用two times来解释twice等等。

四、语境法
将生词用于一个具体的句子中，让别人根据句子的意思或者上下文的意思来推测生词的意思。如：During those days of SARS, doctors and nurses had to be on duty round the clock. 通过理解了全句的意思我们就不难推测出round the clock的意思是day and night了。又如：about有“大约、关于、到处”等很多意思，但若在具体的语境中却只有一个意思。如We shouldn’t throw waste paper about.根据全句的意思，我们不难确定about在此句中的意思是“到处，随处(=here and there)”了。
